  • 911 and Emergency Planning and Management
  • Child-Care centres, Nursery School programs and Durham Behaviour Management Services for children
  • Durham Region Official Plan implementation, delegation authority for local area Municipal Official Plans and Amendments
  • Economic Development, Tourism
  • Long Term Care and services for seniors
  • Municipal Water Supply, treatment and distribution
  • industrial, commerical and residential development approvals, Land Management
  • Public Health programs and services, Family Services counselling
  • Social Housing, Ontario Works program delivery
  • Provincial Offences Court, Prosecution Services, administration and collection of fines
  • Durham Transit and Specialized Transit Services
  • Police Services
  • Regional Roads, bridges, traffic signals and controls
  • Sewage collection, treatment and billing
  • Waste Collection and Disposal Facilities and material recovery throughout region except for Oshawa and Whitby
All departments within the Region report directly to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Region departments include

The Regional Chair is the head of Regional Council and is the Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Corporation
  • presides over all meetings of the Regional Council and is a member of all standing committees
The CAO is the most senior staff person in the Region of Durham and reports to Regional Council works in close collaboration with the Regional Chair
  • responsible for the overall management of the Regional organization, and for ensuring that policy development is completed for presentation to Council
