Legal clinic promotes justice, equality, rights and independence for low-income people by:

Programs:

Social Housing Registry Program: see separate listing for details

Special Needs Housing: upon request, eligible households are placed on the CWL for units modified for accessibility

Rent Supplement Program: on the Centralized Wait List (CWL), some units are subsidized in private and non profit buildings where the tenant pays the Rent-Geared-to-Income portion of the rent to the landlord and the balance is paid by subsidy

Senior Housing: for those who are 65 years of age or older who must apply directly to the Social Housing Registry Program

Secondary Suites Program: forgivable loans for qualified households for municipal fee rebates and/or renovation funding

Home Ownership Program: down payment assistance for qualified persons

Kingston-Frontenac Renovates Program: grants and forgivable loans for home repairs for qualified persons

Capital Investment Program: capital funding in the form of a forgivable loan in exchange for the development of affordable housing

Housing & Homelessness Services System: Housing First approach is practiced locally and includes the following programs: Prevention/Diversion Programs; Housing First/Rapid Re-Housing Program; Emergency Shelters and Homelessness Prevention Fund

Homelessness Prevention Fund: provides funding to low income households (not in receipt of social assistance) which are homeless or at risk of homelessness, to prevent homelessness

Emergency Shelter Services: short term emergency shelter for homeless persons at four locations in the City

Program which provides low-income home owners funding to address urgent repairs and complete accessibility enhancements.

Funding Type

• Grant of $5,000 for accessibility repairs/upgrades
• Forgivable Loan of $10,000 for urgent home repairs
• Combination Grant and Forgivable Loan $10,00 for accessiblity repairs in excess of $5,000

Downsizing and estate settlement

• provides integrated real estate and transition solutions for seniors who are downsizing and those settling estates
• takes on the sale of real estate and handles all the details of the move including cleaning, packing, sorting, selling, unwanted assets and moving the client into their new home

• one year contract cancellable at any time

Group of dedicated volunteers working at the local level to end domestic and sexual violence

Services

• for victims of partner abuse and/or sexual violence, their children, their family members, and agencies that work with perpetrators
• referrals to law enforcement, justice, shelter, housing, health, and counselling support
• develops projects to help identify gaps in services and create public awareness
• offers professional development opportunities for service providers, and create relevant informational and other resources

Helps low income individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and/or who require immediate and urgent assistance with:

• any rent, utility or heat service needs due to emergency, unforeseen or extenuating circumstances
