Searching for Indigenous Peoples

Aims to improve access to justice for Indigenous peoples in Hamilton and surrounding communities by providing culturally respectful and appropriate legal services to Indigenous clients.

A Welcoming Ceremony took place on May 15, 2014 at which Hamilton Community Legal Clinic was presented with an eagle feather which is available as needed to all clients.

Operates affordable housing complexes and support services for Indigenous people in the City of Hamilton.

Delivers programs and services which promote spiritual/emotional growth and wellness. Staff includes community approved healers, teaches, and facilitators.

Programs and services include:

• Traditional teachings
• Cultural programming
• Emotional supports
• Ceremony and Community events

Provides primary and holistic medical care integrated with traditional Indigenous approaches to First Nations, Metis, and Inuit community members. Staff includes both family doctors and nurse practitioners. Care provided includes illness prevention and screening, assessment, treatment and monitoring, counselling, chronic disease management, pre and post-natal care and more.

Provides medical transportation to Indigenous seniors, those with early on-set aging, and those with complex physical disabilities. Clients can be picked up and dropped off to any medical appointments within the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Home and Community Care Support Services catchment area.

Provides access to affordable housing for Indigenous women and their families in the Hamilton-Wentworth area.

Employment resources and coaching to help people with disabilities to find sustainable employment in Ontario:

• assessment of skills, interests and abilities
• match candidates and employers and provide retention supports
• job search strategies and support, including resume development and interview preparation
• information about careers and occupations, local labour market, employment opportunities
• help in maintaining employment
• information and referral to other employment and community services

Better Jobs Ontario -- skills training and financial support for laid-off workers

Services for employers -- help in identifying human resource skills requirements

• matching of workplace needs to workers' skills, capabilities, interests and experience
• support for developing on-the-job training plans and monitoring of placements to support retention

Canada-Ontario Job Grant -- financial support for individual employers to purchase training for their employees

• available to small, medium and large businesses planning to deliver short-term training for existing or new employees

OntarioEquine Education and Employment Program -- a Skills Development Fund project,delivered in partnership with Ontario Harness Horse Association and EquineGuelph, begin an exciting career in the equine industry.

• 6-week virtual equine training course
• Learn from industry experts
• Discover difference careers working with horses
• Work experience opportunity after completion of equine training course

Prenatal education classes, designed to enhance native education and fetal outcome. Program is offered in small groups and individual sessions, stressing traditional native birthing methods, as well as the current medical methods.

Topics include:

• Nutrition
• Healthy lifestyle
• Preparation of labor & delivery
• Breast feeding
• Newborn and baby care in a traditional and culturally appropriate manner

Fosters healing and wellness with a focus on reducing family violence, promoting healthy lifestyles, and providing culture-based programming and healing. Offers counselling for male survivors of sexual assault.

Programs include:Sweats, Kids Grievance, anger management, One to One Support, Monthly Socials , Healthy Relationships. I Am A Kind Man, Kids Cooking, Women's Drum Group, Kids Drumming Group, FASD Talking Circles, and Youth Programming Daily.

Increases awareness of risks associated with alcohol/drug consumption during pregnancy and breastfeeding among urban Aboriginal women through activities for children, support for parents, and a meals-to-go program.

Literacy and basic skills training, including numeracy, digital, communication and interpersonal skills.

Helps learners prepare for employment, apprenticeship, secondary-school credit, post-secondary education and greater independence.

CNIB Deafblind Community Services offers this program for those with visual and hearing impairments.

Provides assistance to all Aboriginal people who are in contact with the legal system, regardless of Status.

Offer support for mental health, trauma and traditional knowledge using our ogwehoweh (native) traditional teachings. Help in exploring culture and supporting the four parts of self (mind, body, emotions and spirit) using ogwehoweh knowledge and resources.

Provides support and assistance to clients in their pursuit of permanent employment through resume writing, job search counseling, computer access, fax/photocopying services, access to job listings, training course listing, and education/occupation resources.

Apatisiwin is a Swampy Cree word meaning Employment, Training and Jobs.

Program provides assistance to Six Nations Band members, in meeting their employment and training objectives by supporting them in obtaining access to employment programs and services.

Providing cultural activities for children, focusing on understanding and values of Aboriginal culture. The program component involves respecting others, our community and ourselves. Focus is on bringing the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual components of the human personality together as children grow and become youth. Akwe:go is a Mohawk word that means All of Us.

Program focuses to design and implement healthy lifestyle programming with the intent to improve health status through increased physical fitness; improved cardiovascular health; smoking reduction; and, improved nutritional knowledge and practices.

Provides community support services to urban Aboriginal clients, regardless of age, who are disabled, chronically ill, frail, elderly or require acute/chronic continuum of care. Services include: medical transportation services, assistance with completing forms, community referrals, home visits, security checks, caregiver support, aid in transitioning from ODSP to Old Age Pension, and congregate dining meals and activities.

Promotes healthy growth and development of Aboriginal babies, build on parenting skills, and link families with the community supports and resources.

The Housing First based approach aims to provide Indigenous individuals experiencing homelessness direct access to housing regardless of the identifiable barriers of addictions, mental health, trauma, family and cultural breakdown. Provides life skills and cultural programming, housing advocacy and supports.

A group of women who support, educate, and empower Metis women. Through reciprocity and the healing journey, the Circle aims to help Metis woman reclaim and celebrate their cultures, histories and identities.

Offers culturally safe and centralized call centre to connect Indigenous residents in Hamilton to local and government resources available to them.
