Offers summer camps in a safe and fun environment, teaching children how to sail and building skills in boat handling, safety, seamanship, and more. Waterfront Camp (ages 5-7) is for children to learn what it feels like to be on the water, and CANSail (ages 6-18) is a four-stage program that builds on skills in the Optimist/420 dinghy.
Waterfront Camp (ages 5-7)
Offers outdoor, play-based learning environment alongside our Junior Sail program for children. The one week camp is an opportunity for children to explore sailing on the Hamilton Waterfront and in an indoor, classroom environment.
CANSail 1 (ages 6-18)
Introduces new sailors to the fundamental sailing skills in the Optimist and 420 dinghy. The type of boat sailed is dependent upon on the sailors weight and height. Focuses on creating a fun environment while developing physical literacy. On the water, young sailors work on boat safety, boat-handling skills, and seamanship. In the classroom, students will learn basic terminology, knots and the rules of the water. Sailors also work on swimming skills taught in our pool by certified swimming instructors.
CANSail 2
Offers young sailors the opportunity to review and master skills previously learned, to sail with confidence and to perform basic sailing skills proficiently. Emphasis is on safety, seamanship, man overboard rescues, and right of way rules. The 420 dinghy has two sailors per boat creates teamwork in a fun and rewarding social environment and the Opti dinghy sailed by one sailor creates independence in a fun and rewarding social environment.
Prerequisites: Participants must be age 10 or over, and must have previously completed CANSail 1.
CANSail 3
A four-week-long program that builds upon the fundamental skills established in CANSail 1&2 on the water and in the classroom. Sailors at this level will refine and improve their skills from to become more confident sailing alone and in pairs. Introduces boat tuning, sail trim, backwards sailing, roll tacking and surfing. All sailors are given opportunities to apply individual sailing skills and sail with friends. Will also be introduced to the basic racing skills needed to compete in club race-nights.
A minimum of two weeks of sailing are required to complete this level.
Prerequisites: Participants must be age 11 or over, must be able to swim, and must have previously completed CANSail 2.
CANSail 4
A four-week-long program that builds upon the fundamental skills established in CANSail 3 on the water and in the classroom. Sailors are challenged to perfect their sailing skills in heavier wind conditions, both individually and in pairs. Greater emphasis is placed on self-sufficiency and problem solving, including skills such as rudderless sailing, trapeze, fly spinnaker and advanced theory. Sailors will also be introduced to the basic racing skills needed to compete in club race-nights. Sailors will have the ability to participate in RHYC and other local regattas.
Prerequisites: Participants must be age 12 or over, must be able to swim, and must have previously completed CANSail 3.
Integration of special needs may be accommodated and will be reviewed on an individual basis.
