Alternative learning program for secondary students

This program may meet the needs of the following type of student:

• a desire to continue education
• at risk of dropping out of school
• attendance concerns at mainstream school
• require a non-traditional learning environment
• may experience difficulty getting along with others
• experiencing anxiety or mental health issues
• dealing with complex issues beyond school which impact learning
• all possibilities exhausted at the local school

A place where all new English Language Learners and First Nation, Métis, or Inuit students and their families are welcomed into the Grand Erie District School Board community

Services offered (SK - Grade 12):

• language and cultural interpretation
  
• assessment of student's current level of English language and math skills
  
• recommendations to appropriate programs
  
• introduction to the Ontario school system

Free English classes for permanent residents and convention refugees as part of the Language Instruction for Newcomers (LINC) program funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC)

Free program that combines language training and essential skills for the workplace. This program is a partnership between Mohawk College and Neighbour to Neighbour's Hamilton Community Food Centre.

Students learn English and develop skills through group work on multi-media projects. Participation prepares students for post-secondary education, everyday life and the workplace.

• Opportunity to participate in Newcomer Mentorship Program

LINC classes available:

• LINC classes (levels 4 to 8)
• Writing class (level 5)

• LINC Youth Video and Photography (for students 18-25 years old)

Courses to qualified individuals whose first language is not English and who have previous education or work experience from outside Canada in Business, Health Sciences, or Technology. Courses are designed to develop workplace communication skills specific to one's field. All participants need to have a language assessment conducted at an Assessment Centre at the YMCA.

A full-time day program designed for Internationally Trained Professionals. The Workplace Preparation Program (ELT) prepares individuals to work in their field through a 12 week language training, related to workplace communication and cultural practices, networking, resume, cover letter and interview preparation.

Offers English as a Second Language (ESL) instructional programs to adults who have immigrated to Canada. ESL classes and Language Instruction for Newcomers (LINC) classes available days and in the summer.

Programs operated through the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) and funded through the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development.

Courses designed for adult learners who want to complete their high school diploma. Focus on reading, writing, mathematics, and social sciences.

Offers a variety of programs to allow students to pursue and achieve their English language proficiency and educational goal. Class levels are from literacy to advanced and focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing. Day and evening classes are available.

A six week conversation circle that helps newcomers improve their English. Meets Wednesday evenings, light refreshments provided.
