Group of dedicated volunteers working at the local level to end domestic and sexual violence

Services

• for victims of partner abuse and/or sexual violence, their children, their family members, and agencies that work with perpetrators
• referrals to law enforcement, justice, shelter, housing, health, and counselling support
• develops projects to help identify gaps in services and create public awareness
• offers professional development opportunities for service providers, and create relevant informational and other resources

COVID19 Conditions

• The Legal Centre is serving only one client at a time currently, due to COVID protocols. Those with appointments take precedence over walk-ins.
• Clients attending in person at the office or satellites must wear a properly fitted face mask, maintain social distance and use hand sanitizer before and after visit.
• The Legal Centre is available to clients and the public via telephone to provide free summary legal advice and legal education.

Regular Service
Provides free summary legal advice and legal representation, referrals, community development, public legal education, and law reform initiatives in poverty law.

• Areas in which summary advice and legal representation are made include employment insurance, social assistance (Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Program), Canada Pension Plan, tenant's rights, Workplace Safety and Insurance, employment law including Employment Standards, Ontario Human Rights and some consumer law issues.
• Also assists with some seniors issues (Old Age Security, Powers of Attorney, etc) and some Indigenous issues.

Program which provides low-income home owners funding to address urgent repairs and complete accessibility enhancements.

Funding Type

• Grant of $5,000 for accessibility repairs/upgrades
• Forgivable Loan of $10,000 for urgent home repairs
• Combination Grant and Forgivable Loan $10,00 for accessiblity repairs in excess of $5,000

• soffits and fascia

Energy Efficiency:

• furnace e-star rating
• insulation to R-40 rating
• window replacement e-argon
• doors

Provides oversight and administration of housing programs

Social Housing:

• provides program and subsidy administration to the 15 social housing providers listed below under public, non-profit, co-operative, federal and rent supplement programs, including special needs housing

Social Housing Registry Program: see separate listing for details

Special Needs Housing: upon request, eligible households are placed on the CWL for units modified for accessibility

Rent Supplement Program: on the Centralized Wait List (CWL), some units are subsidized in private and non profit buildings where the tenant pays the Rent-Geared-to-Income portion of the rent to the landlord and the balance is paid by subsidy

Senior Housing: for those who are 65 years of age or older who must apply directly to the Social Housing Registry Program

Secondary Suites Program: forgivable loans for qualified households for municipal fee rebates and/or renovation funding

Home Ownership Program: down payment assistance for qualified persons

Kingston-Frontenac Renovates Program: grants and forgivable loans for home repairs for qualified persons

Capital Investment Program: capital funding in the form of a forgivable loan in exchange for the development of affordable housing

Housing & Homelessness Services System: Housing First approach is practiced locally and includes the following programs: Prevention/Diversion Programs; Housing First/Rapid Re-Housing Program; Emergency Shelters and Homelessness Prevention Fund

Homelessness Prevention Fund: provides funding to low income households (not in receipt of social assistance) which are homeless or at risk of homelessness, to prevent homelessness

Emergency Shelter Services: short term emergency shelter for homeless persons at four locations in the City

Assists those who are at imminent risk of homelessness * case managers assist those who are seeking emergency services on short-term basis
